In reply to your Despatch No. 244 of the

14th. ultimo, I have the honour to inform you that your assump-

tion as to the salary, including the 2100 paid by the Imperial

Post Office, drawn by Mr. Lewis and as to the nature of the

application made by him, is correct.

No Officer was available for the appoint-

ment of Acting Assistant Postmaster-General, but the Accountant

has since January last been allowed to draw one-fourth of the

lapsing salary of the Assistant Postmaster-General in consider-

ation of the fact that he has assisted in discharging the

duties of that office in addition to his om.

The other one-fourth of the salary with one-half

the salary of the Postmaster-General has lapsed to the Treasury.
